Cooking with bacon is cheating. I will look the other way for these guys.

The restaurant Slaters 50/50 is named after one of its signature menu items, a burger patty that is 50% ground beef and 50% ground bacon. You’d think with a patty like that you wouldn’t need anything else, but they offers ome nice treats to go along with the burger.

Here is the burger with an over medium egg, avacado mash, pepper jack cheese, and chipotle mayo. Do you hears the angels singing?

When you bite into this burger it holds together well. I was expecting the thing to melt into oblivion. It’s so deceiving to get so much bacon flavor but no bacon texture. While I do miss tearing into an actual piece of bacon, that normally ends up with me pulling the whole strip out during the first bite and having no bacon for the rest of the burger. This keeps the bacon coming the whole time.

If you do need that bacon kick but want something different, definitely check out the Peanut Butter and Jealousy. It’s a ground beef burger topped with thick cut bacon, creamy peanut butter and strawberry jelly. I was offered a bite of this one, and holy smokes is it good! While the jelly doesn’t come through very much, the creaminess of the peanut butter is the perfect compliment to the salty bacon. I think the next burger I grill at home might have to use peanut butter instead of cheese.

Slater’s 50/50 is a long way out for those of you not living on the far east or west side of Orange County, but it’s definitely worth a trip to try a burger. To sweeten the deal, Slater’s offers a great selection of beer, including some harder to find beers like Firestone’s Parabola. Get your bacon on!

Hoppy Beerthday to Me!

I got to celebrate my 31st birthday this weekend with my buddy Harrison, who shares a birthday week with me, in awesome fashion, sharing beer and food with some friends.

We cracked open some brews and even some special bottles I picked up. I got to share my love of beer with my friends.

For food, we tossed some bacon wrapped pork loins into the bottom of the smoker.

On top, one more pork loin and baby back ribs. I had to roll the ribs and tie them because there wasn’t enough room to lay them out. They actually didn’t fit this way either. I had to tilt them so they didn’t press up against the lid.

Brautwursts, boiled in our home brew red ale before heading to the grill.

Toss some veggies onto the grill, and the party was on its way.

It was also a gorgeous day to be outside. Thank you, sun, for coming out for my birthday.

It was good getting to spend time with friends just hanging out.

My friend even brought his dog, and she loved our sheep skin rug.

Michelle even made some awesome treats for the group. She made Sriracha Deviled Eggs and Mini Spinach Cups. Here she is, pulling her shrimp toast from the oven.

The meat came out great, with a nice smoke ring.

There was so much meat left over, which is almost never a bad thing.

House into Home

Our house is slowly but surely turning into a home. We are a long way from filling up the rooms with furniture, but we’re slowly adding our touches to the house to make it our own. You may have already seen Michelle’s contact paper masterpiece. Other than just the way it looks, we’re starting to feel like we belong in the house, especially with daily living and cooking.

This is a pork loin, wrapped in a bacon mat. It will soon join a pork shoulder already in the smoker. Yes, cooking with bacon is cheating but who is going to stop such a delicious breaking of the rules?

Here is a random assortment of ingredients tossed into a slow cooker with a piece of beef. I had zero idea what I was doing here. I used no recipe at all.

The end result kind of showed I used no recipe. It need salt, but that’s nothing a little salt added later couldn’t fix…or some hot sauce.

The pork shoulder looked great, but because I got a late start I don’t think all the fat rendered down all the way.

Still the meat had a great smokey flavor and went nicely with the sauteed onions and other vegetables.

I was a little bit scared about how the bacon would handle for four hours in the smoker. As you can see, it handled the time like a champ.

On the inside, perfection. This is definitely going on the list of smoking recipes to keep. I will, however, work on the glaze for this dish a bit more.

Work Lunch

To celebrate the completion of our move, we decided to break out the BBQ and cook up some hot dogs and burgers. Of course we topped it off with bacon. I had to toss the foil on the ground and stomp out a couple grease fires.

The diet starts tomorrow.

Preparing for my Man Cave

Living with Michelle has been very easy. We’re both easy going people, so there has been almost no butting of the heads. Even deciding on how to furnish and decorate the place has been a breeze. Still in the back of my mind is a fear that slowly our place will be taken over by feminine touches. That’s why I am keeping a list of items for my man cave when we get a bigger place.

The man cave will have plenty of Star Wars touches to it, which is why this particular item is a must. It’s not only cool, but it’s also very functional.

Why yes that is a Star Wars lamp and MP3 player alarm clock. Of course the only music allowed on this particular item will be music from the soundtrack to Star Wars. Nothing gets you going in the morning like the Imperial March. [via Think Geek]

Although I’m some sort of anomaly that doesn’t get hangovers, Michelle insists that it will start soon now that I am thirty. Well, when that time comes, I will be prepared.

Bacon Drink Tabs! The effervescent smell of bacon will be my hangover cure, and if Michelle is wrong and I don’t end up being a wreck the next day from a night of binge drinking, at least I’ll be able to enjoy some Bacon Beer or Bacon Scotch. [via Archie McPhee]

Popularity as Measured in Bacon

If you ever look in my parents’ freezer or fridge at any given time, there is no bacon in it. There is one exception. Whenever my brother is in town there is bacon. He will be home for Christmas and there is bacon in the fridge. FOUR PACKS OF BACON! I’d say she’s playing favorites here by giving him special treatment, but I have the family company and I’ve been living at home forever.

Still I might give it all up for bacon.

Bacon: Good for You

It’s Sunday already and some of you are still lying in bed, unable to get up from last night’s fun. Perhaps you would be having an easier time if you had some bacon. Some Sourdough Jacks and Ultimate Bacon Cheeseburgers after late nights out are just what your body needs to survive a night of imbibing. Next time your driver doesn’t want to stop for to get a late night snack, tell him you have to because it’s scientifically proven to be healthy.
